This workshop will introduce you to searching and text mining for primary research at the Northeastern Library using the Historical Newspapers database from Proquest. We’ll review traditional database search methods: developing search terms, combining words and phrases, and filtering, in order to get the targeted results you need. After evaluating the strengths and limitations of this approach, we’ll take a look at TDM Studio, a cloud-based tool from Proquest that enables data and text-mining of Historical Newspapers. Through hands-on activities, you will learn to: 1. create data visualizations (charts, maps, etc) 2. experiment with topic modeling (finding key terms and topics 3. identify opinions using sentiment analysis This workshop is for anyone getting started with library newspaper research, or considering options for teaching with online newspapers. You’ll leave with the foundational skills and confidence to move forward on your own explorations, whether using Proquest or other newspaper databases and platforms.
